Surfers have been going to Bali seriously since the 1960's in search of perfect, uncrowded waves. The expansion of tourist facilities on Bali has brought the crowds, but also the provision of new services, in particular outrigger charters to Indonesia's 'other islands' of Nusa Lembongan, Lombok and Sumbawa which have quality waves. The best altemative for reaching more remote waves in Indonesia and sustaining an enjoyable stay in that locale is to use a boat for both transport and accommodation. Any surf spot is accessible by boat and, properly organised and equipped should mean you have a safe and comfortable stay on board. CLIMATE The climate is very tropical, May to October is the dry season, while December to March is wetter. Temperatures range from 21 to 33C so light clothing is generally all that's needed. ELECTRICITY The current in Indonesia is 220 volt and the plugs are slightly different so an adaptor would be needed for any appliances you wish to take. WHAT TO BRING First-aid kit , sunscreen, hat, large plastic bags for water protection of gear, fibreglass repair kit, toiletries, insect repellant, rash shirt for the sun and booties for protection against the sharp live coral bottoms. MEDICAL Please consult your doctor for advised precautions. ( also check out http://www.tmvc.com.au ) PASSPORTS & VISAS A visa is required for Bali and is issued on arrival for a fee of US$ 25.00 for a stay of up to 30 days when travelling on an Australian Passport. Any longer duration of stay will require a visa to be issued prior to arrival. MONEY The currency in Indonesia is the rupiah and it is usually best, if possible, to change traveller's cheques and cash at an authorised money changer rather than a bank or a hotel. Take as much cash as you feel comfortable carrying and any traveller's cheques are fine in Australian currency. WATER The water in Indonesia is generally not suitable for drinking so bottled water should be purchased there. AIRPORT TAX There is an Intemational departure tax of 150,000 rupiah.
